What is Lampworking?

Lampworking is the art of melting and shaping molten glass into beads, figurines, ornaments, vessels or any number of forms. Today, glass is melted using a torch, although the term "lampwork" comes from lamps used in earlier times before torches were available. Many types of glass are available to use in lampworking and each has its own qualities. Italian Moretti and Murano soda-line glass is commonly used. This glass is available in a variety of vibrant robust colors. When colorful moretti designs and patterns are encased in clear glass, the effect of light shining through the glass achieves a unique and luminous depth. Borosilicate or pyrex glass can also be used in lampworking. This glass is a much harder glass than Moretti. Its colors are achieved by using various metals and compounds, which when worked in the torch, can produce dazzling and surprising effects.

Each of our flameworked beads are kiln fired or "annealed" in order to control the heating and cooling of the glass so that the molecules within the glass distribute evenly making each glass bead or flameworked piece strong, durable and perfectly suitable for jewelry.
